The UEPA community has completed a series of online webinars on ‘Approaches to dealing with problematic behaviour of students’

 

On 2-18 April, 28 teachers and staff members of the Ukrainian Engineering Pedagogics Academy attended a series of online webinars on ‘Approaches to dealing with problematic student behaviour’. The online training took place as part of the project ‘Strengthening the capacities of Ukrainian academic staff in innovative pedagogical and psychological education and research’, which Masaryk University (Czech Republic) is implementing in cooperation with Ukrainian partners. The project is financially supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in the framework of development cooperation.

In total, 6 important topics were considered, which gave a thorough understanding of the causes of problem behaviour, possible manifestations and methods of dealing with it.

- ‘Problematic behaviour of students - causes and consequences’: relevance of the topic of problematic behaviour; causes and sources of difficult behaviour; useful tools that teachers can use in teaching; preparation of future teachers for difficulties in their work.

- ‘Trauma-informed approach’: effective communication; work with needs; work with trauma, aggressive behaviour; work with stress; stress management.

- “Social and emotional learning”: dealing with emotions; wellbeing; understanding and managing emotions; interpersonal skills, including empathy, cooperation and conflict resolution; reducing challenging behaviour, e.g, aggression, bullying, disobedience and other unwanted behaviours; reduction of emotional distress, e.g. anxiety, stress or social isolation; self-awareness; self-management; responsible decision-making; interpersonal skills; social awareness.

Council Circle and Restorative Practices: a method that reduces classroom conflict, improves classroom climate, strengthens relationships and student responsibility; supports at-risk children, fosters positive growth, enhances classroom safety and order, and increases student interest in learning; important for future academic and professional success; teaches a person to respond appropriately to the environment in which they are placed.

- ‘Gestalt Therapy, Applied Drama’: application of drama education methods in the school environment, impressions and experiences; work with external manifestations and emotions.

‘PBIS - Positive Behavioural Intervention Support: support for vulnerable children, fostering positive development, improving safety and order in the classroom; importance for future academic and professional achievement; teaching a person to respond to the environment in which they are in. A three-level model focused on prevention, from the classroom/school to the individual.

The series of webinars was very intense and informative, and the new knowledge gained will be useful to our teachers in their future work.
